The North Philly Phresh Dance Workshop
Started in 2009, IPDC partnered with Taehoo Lee and The ROCK Project to produce our first ever Philadelphia Dance Camp during Philadelphia School Districts spring break. With 6 of our team members and 6 volunteer high schoolers from Girls High in Philadelphia, the first dance camp was a great success. With about 35 kids in attendance throughout the week, a spectacular performance was held on the Saturday before Easter at the Church of the Advocate at 18th and Diamond.
We chose to work with the children of 18th and Diamond because of the amount of violence that these kids encounter on a regular basis. Our eyes were opened to not only their violent lifestyles, but a huge literacy problem in the Philadelphia schools. It is our goal to continue working with this population to bring them literacy training so that they are successful in school and in life.
Plans are in place for a camp during Winter Break as well. On average it costs approximately $50 to send a kid to camp in North Philadelphia. Please consider sending one (or more!) kids to camp this spring!
